How come middle-class Caucasians are locked out of most educational opportunities?
I am a white female sophomore from an average income in high school. I am also the valedictorian of my class. However, grades appear to matter very little. Whenever I attempt to apply for anything to expand my education such as summer programs I find that you must be either a minority or make less then $25,000 for yearly income. I just don't get it. It does not matter how hard I work, it's either become a minority or hand over thousands of dollars to learn something new. Why is it that now it is the color of your skin which determines how much you deserve something and no longer the effort you yourself put in? What happens to the people that don't fall into the categories of rich, poor, or minority. What happens to those who are stuck in the middle? Are they overlooked? Are they forgotten? I am not racist at all. Many of my friends are, in fact of various ethnicities. I'm merely a child trying to figure out how I get a chance, because I surely haven't found it yet.

Congratulations. You have just realized that you must work for what you want. That may mean taking out loans which you must pay back. Get over it. People have it a lot harder than you.

I understand the allocation of educational funds may not be "equal", but at this time, there is nothing that you can do about it. How about you go to college, become an financial wizard, run for office with one of your platform issues as education funding. That's what it takes. As for the complaining, there are a lot of underprivileged minority kids that still can't get this illustrious funding that you yourself are competing for.

And by the way, an education earned at your states college/university program is just as well earned as one at a big name/ivy league school.

You want an affordable education? Do 2 years at a local community college and transfer to your state college/university nearest to your home (save $$ and don't live in the dorms). Then when you want to do your grad work, THEN apply to the big name schools. Grad students have better opportunities for fellowships and grants.

It is entirely presumptuous of you to claim that you are "valedictorian" of your class only 1.5 years into high school. You may currently have the highest GPA in your class, but you aren't valedictorian until you are about to or have graduated.

Your sense of both jealousy and entitlement are overblown. Assume that they didn't give financial aid to the poor or to minorities. What would change then? You still wouldn't be able to afford to go, but now neither would they. Opportunities given to others are not stolen from you.

By wasting time and effort harping on the opportunities that others are given, you're missing out on ones available to YOU.

Working hard is worthless in itself, it's only valuable when your efforts are directed intelligently.

Have you asked your guidance counselor for assistance in finding summer enrichment and scholarships? Have you looked into your local community college? In my state we have a program called "Youth Options." Students take college level courses for free (it's paid for by the school district.)

If you happen to like computer programming, Google offers a wonderful opportunity. You get paid to work on open source projects, somewhere from $500-$3000 for the summer. Yes, even high school students are welcome.

I once entered an essay contest regarding gender equity. My thesis: As long as we continue to recognize differences in gender, there will never be equity, separate can never be equal. I actually won with an essay about desegregating bathrooms. I won $50 and I got to add another credential to my CV, which helped me win other awards.

I'm sure your school offers extra curricular activities. (Model Legislature or debate, academic decathlon, math team, etc) Doing well in those also provides many opportunities for enrichment.

At one school I was held back a grade. The following year my family moved, and I went to a different school. I ended up as class valedictorian.

I comprehend the allocation of academic funds might no longer be "equivalent", yet immediately, there is not any longer something which you're able to do approximately it. How approximately you flow to varsity, substitute into an economic wizard, run for place of work with one in all your platform themes as training investment. that's what it takes. hey i agree and i am black, i mean if u are poor enough financial aid pays for everything pretty much and if u are rich enough you can pay yourself, and its like what about the middle class you know they need help too. and not all minorities get everything paid for, my friends dad made to much and she couldnt get no type of help.

hey look for all kinds of scholarships, get good grades, there are alll kinds out there, go to www.fastweb.com you fill out questions and it narrows down scholarships so u arent wasting your time on ones you wont qualify for. there is money out there you have to look.

i feel you, but seriously start looking now, you can get scholarships for being left handed or being able to right with both hands, start learning how to write. you can get scholarhsips for volunteering alot and keep looking u will find a way. money is out there.

also i seen some asian boy receive a scholarship from the united negro college fund, maybe it isnt just for blacks!!!!!

good luck, im a senior and my mom makes less than 25,000 a year she is on SSI so she gets welfare for me and my brother since she cant work, and financial aid wont pay for everything, i will most likely have to take out a loan probably

You're not locked-out, it's just that the bar is set much higher. I know a young man who missed a National Merit Scholorship by 7 points. If he was black or Hispanic he could've easily have gotten a National Black or National Hispanic Scholorship. The system rewards poor results.

Coming fro a white guy..... Maybe it has to do with equal opportunity... In the past whites locked minorities out of opportunities and now is pay back-time. I am sure minorities didn't like it one bit more than you don't now. And as a woman wait until you have to compete with male white counterpart in the workplace... better bring some very nice legs to work... Good luck!

Stop looking for a handout. You should be ashamed
to be middle class, your parents should have gotten
their education and progress like all the other white
people!

Get use to it now. Sorry that previous generations let this happen to you..... But look at it this way..... YOU work hard, pay for it yourself, and you will owe NO ONE. The ones that get all the help can't say that... hence, you are better than them!!

Where do you live?

Country? State? City?

Personally I have HUGE problems with any race based selection although obviously i do believe in scholarships.

In canada, ypu'd get student loans at least. If you were top of your classl, you'd likely be eligeble for scholarship

this may happen in some situations, but youre makin crap up, i know plenty of white ppl that are givin full scholarships, in fact thats who most sholarships go to, according to statistics, so if you are really the valedictorian(school aint even over yet though so i doubt it) but if so you shouldnt have any problems
