I had the same problem before... and I was trying to figure out a solution that does not prevent me from shopping completely. My solution is to never (okay, rarely) pay full retail price. When I got a bargain, I would save the difference between the full price and how much I paid into another account in my bank. This way, I still enjoy shopping and know that at the same time I am saving money for myself. It is a great feeling. Never pay full price!!
As for the coupon site, you have to try out SearchAllDeals.com. It searches 60+ deal and coupon sites and will not return spam results. It saved me a lot of money and time.
Hope this is helpful...

I have found two ways to help with this particular problem. The first thing that you can do is keep a spending log. Record date, time, items, and amount spent on a piece of paper that you carry with you EVERYWHERE; this will help you to realize what you're spending and help you realize that not all of those purchases are necessities. The second thing that you can do is, if you have spare change at the end of the day, don't just throw it aside; put it in a jar or a container of sorts. A few pennies here and there may not seem like a lot, but after time it really adds up and you can put the money to use, either buying something that you really have been saving for, or perhaps putting it in a savings account as a precaution or a safekeeping.

Find out why do you need to spend that money. Tracking where your money goes is a good way. However, everything starts from within.
Tracking your money does not help much if you simply love spending.
Finding out the reasons for spending will re-wire your thought about money. Some have weak thought about money, once they get hold of money, they would want to spend it.
For example, why do you want to buy that candy? Why do you need a new pair of shoes? Is it a need or want?
Most spend money because of "want". They go for instant gratification, instead of delay gratification.
To save money, switching this mindset is necessary. Delay gratification keeps you from spending more than you should. Why do you have to buy that cup of $5 cup of coffee when you can brew it at home or have it at your office pantry?
Changing small habits help as well.

You need the 50/30/20 plan.......it works!! have been using it myself for over a year now..wish I had it when I was younger!!
First list all of your necessities; rent, food, etc...this should equal no more than 50% of your paycheck..then take 30% of your paycheck to spend on what you want; in your case shoes, etc...then 20% goes for savings and investing!! if you have to 'tweak' the figures a little ( I save 30% and spend 20%) you can, of course, if the 50% seems a little tough, just ask yourself, if you had no job tomorrow, what would you HAVE to spend money on? that will give you the 'necessities' lists..in any case, play with the figures and see what it can do for you...I know that knowing I can spend "x' number of dollars each paycheck on whatever I want is a great feeling; as I am still setting aside money for savings/investments!!!! It will give you peace of mind, which is priceless!!

Set a monthly budget for yourself. Carry around a little notebook and log everything you buy. Review it at the end of the month against your budget.
You could also try setting a goal for yourself. Like saving for a new car or your fave coat or so much $ to spend on Christmas presents this year.

My best practice for not spending is when I find something I want, I fight the urge to buy it right then. Go away from it and decide to go back to it tomorrow if you still are thinking about it. It's amazing how much I've saved by not impulse-shopping like I used to do.
For saving money when I DO shop online, I almost always shop through http://www.dealtaker.com/
GREAT bargains and fun freebies. Always updating because all their members add deals they find. Pretty cool!
