Someone conservative, the 80's, Pretty in Pink, Breakfast club, most movies with Molly Ringwald. Usually (not always) they have parents or a parent that has a college education. People who wear "mall clothes" Izod, A&F, Ralph Lauren, The Limited etc. I also think people who may wear those clothes could have gotten them anywhere, a street corner knock off guy, an upscale second hand store, or a discount store. Utimately, "Prep" is not just a fashion statement, it is a state of mind, an attitude, a way of life for some, a statement about how you want others to view you.
