going to the switch. How do we figure out what the switches go to? Other switches in each of the 3 boxes work fine.

Follow through by turning them off and on. While taking down a wall I found a complete fuse box with four good fuses in it, all wired and ready to go, except for one thing, the wires only went to the baseboard of the wall. Apparently someone was to lazy to remove the box after disconnecting it. This may be your problem too. The box was dry walled in the wall, I would have never known it had I not taken down the wall.

look in the switch box to see the direction the wires come from. wires going up usually goto a light and the lower wires usually are feeds or charging an outlet . if its a real old house, it could be anything really.

If the switches are next to a known light switch and you do not have a ceiling fan, there may be a pre-wire for a ceiling fan. This is so you can control the fan and light kit separately.

They may go to outlets.

I have them in every room so I can turn off lamps with the switch.

Usually it is the top outlet.
