Is it the other person's fault that they do not understand chatspeak?

Ok, if you are, say, Swahili and you come into an English speaking chatroom, do you expect everone to speak Swahili? Even if more of them are bilingual in Swahili and English, is it not polite to speak in the dominant language which is, as I stipulated in this example, English?

That applies to all of the internet, boards as well.

I can tell you that if you use proper English you are going to reach a larger audience. Many of us, myself included, are going to just ignore you rather than bother with the nuisance of deciphering your chatspeak (that IS what internet slang is called). I, myself, not only will not bother myself to decipher your words but I will chalk you up as being rude for the assumption that I should understand YOUR chatspeak.

First, it is not INTERNET slang, it is CHATSPEAK. And it is more casual than internet speach.

Proper netticut says you use proper language on the internet, except when casually chatting in a chatroom or chatterbox. When talking on the general internet, you should 'speak' as if you were talking to someone that you respect but are not buddy-buddy with. Chatspeak is for your buds, in private conversations.

Many people use the internet, but do not go into chatrooms. They do not need to know the language used there. If you are on the internet, and have manners, you should make your posts understandable to all, rather than to the small portion that uses slang.

The young on the internet tend to think they rule it all. But then, they think that about many things. The internet is more than chatrooms. When you are not in them, speak properly.

Edit to reply to the comment. Just because you have not heard of it does not mean it is not so. The original term IS chatspeak, because it is used in chat, and that is where it originated. It is also called internet slang. And, by definition, SLANG is the use of highly informal words and expressions that are not considered standard in the speaker's dialect or language. Slang is very often specific to a particular context or group, while language and dialect tend to be specific to a particular territory.

In other words, not for general use in a multicultural, multiracial group unless all know it. To use it where all do not know it is.. how shall I put it.. rude.

There is no reason to use slang. What is wrong with spelling a word the way it should be. Are you in such a hurry to get your answer up here? It is fine to use it, when you are talking to friends, or on an email, call me old fashioned, but it is much more polite to spell a word out. Do you think you will be able to talk like that, when you go out and get a job? No...

Depends on where you're using the slang. If you are in a forum where people don't use the slang it'll only cause confusion and make you look silly. Messaging someone is a forum you can get away with it. I myself still have trouble deciphering it. I may sit there a minute trying to figure out what the acronym means.

You may know how to spell, but by typing words incorrectly, you are not contributing to society as a whole. If everyone used internet slang, it would eventually become "THE" way to spell the word, even if it is incorrect. Children will grow up knowing only shortened versions of real words. To them, it will be the right way and the proper spelling will look wrong. So ignorant is probably the correct description. I know many people who spell words incorrectly on tests and essays BECAUSE they are so used to their online spelling.

Because it's an insult. We know the "internet slang" language. It's just annoying, but highly useful when you have character limits.

People who type properly tend to receive more respect, and most of them deserve it. Most of them are more mature.

Some people think you're either too lazy to spell the words correctly and some think you just can't spell. I don't know why people think like that =/

the only thing that is wrong with it is that... people get addicted or used to it... and they start to use it in everyday instances such as in conversation or in business applications.

for example if you think something is funny that your friend says and instead of laughing you blurt out LOL!
