You usually get a full tank of gas to start with (that would be free,) but when you need to refuel again then you do have to pay for it with your own money.

Well, if you are referring to you renting the car and a group of people are going with you, they should have to pay for the gas. If you all decided to go as a group your friends should pay for it, if you invited them, then you should pay for it.

Yes, you're responsible for the gas.
the car will be full when you rent it. You are required to bring it back full, If it isn't, they will fill it for you - at about 4 bucks a gallon.
