Oh yes, like many people I was terrified of monsters in my closet. I couldn't sleep unless the closet door was closed and I had my stuffed dog to "protect me."

I admit that I still get illogically creeped out sometimes when my room is dark. Only now it's not monsters; it's robbers and rapists. I guess there are some fears we never grow out of.

Even Stephen King, the greatest in his genre', is scared of what is under his bed. And who knows what really lurks in the closet? With the door closed, who could tell. But with the closet door slightly cracked open...well, we ALL know there is something in there! Staring at us! Waiting! Frankly, I don't see how anyone can sleep in total darkness and silence. Even in the light of day, sitting alone in my cabin in the country, with no source of noise or music....I find it disturbing what one can hear. There ARE things moving about. If you pay attention, you can even feel the air being disturbed. Invisible, they move about the house, making the occassional shuffling sound...or a tic....or a creak on the floor. But at night, in the dark, in silence...they manifest in the darkness, and stare at us from just beyond the focusing abilities of our own vision. Oh they are there alright. I have tried this experiment, and found myself running outside the comforts of my home, into a virtually wild environment in the mountains. I felt safer outside with wild predatory animals than I did inside my own home with ..them. During the day, I have even felt a warm and comfortable sensation, sometimes. Maybe the visitor was a beloved passed relative. But at night, whatever lurks in the dark corners is menacing, and exudes violence and evil. It is apparent it wants to harm you. The only thing that has changed for me since I was little, is the fact that I can now describe what I sense, instead of crying and pointing. And I leave the TV on constantly, even at night. I don't WANT to hear what is moving around while I am trying to rest. Also, at some point in my childhood, I seem to have dismissed my invisible friend. I really don't know whatever happened to him. I'll close with a poem dedicated to him:
The other day, upon the stairs
I saw a man that wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish...he'd go away

I remember thinking the devil himself was under my bed complete with bright red skin,a pointed tail, and a pitch fork. Forget the fact that the bottom of my bed was only 6 inches off the floor I still thought it until I was about 8. Now I don't worry if any monsters get under my bed now , my dogs will handle it.

Yah, I was initially afraid of the monsters under my bed till I was 5. The impression I had of monsters was of some cat-like creature, like a man-tiger. I would sing till I fell asleep because I thought the song would lull the monster to sleep.

Then my little sister was born. I grew up overnight. I didn't have time for unseen monsters because I was convinced that this little bundle of joy (for me too, at times) was a monster in disguise intent on stealing my mother away from me. Dad was away on army duty while we stayed back and I blamed my sis for that too. But drkness till terrified me.

A couple of years went by..... Mom had time for both of us. Now sis was older. Old enough to know fear. And old enough to express it. It was the same old fear of teh dark. Uh-oh, time for big brother to come to the rescue!!!! I think this was when I banished my fear of the dark forever. When I decided to show my sis that there's nothing in the dark, nothing under the bed or in the closet. When I laboured all day to conjure words to chant in front of her, so that she knew the monsters had been scared away for the rest of the night, till it was time again for big brother to chant the monster words the next night.

I wasn't afraid anymore because I couldn't afford to be. I mean, I was more afraid of losing face than of some stupid shithead monster looking to eat me. "Darn him!" I'd think, "and if he choses to eat me, let him die of indigestion....." My baby sister looked up to me, and the thought of the helpless tears that would trickle down her face, if and when she thought that Big Brother too was helpless against the monsters, made me squirm.

I was afraid of whatever was going to come out of my closet, under my bed. When i was little i swear i turned over and saw a dead camel with blood and sand all over it looking at me and then i put the covers over my head. Pretty freaking scary i was like 6 years old and i remember it like it was yesterday!
