Graphic design is probably the second step, after the general idea or concept is made for the item to be printed/published/packaged. Depending on the complexity of the design, graphic artists are needed to put the idea into paper/ worksheet.
So a graphic designer will be employed in all of these industries, if not outsourced by the company through agencies or free lance. They are the skilled employees of these industries.

Graphic Design is now referred to as visual communications.
It is the main part of the above mentioned. Anything you see with an image or word from a cereal box, movie credits, newspaper article or even a clothes label has to designed by someone. Logos, letterheads, magazine ads, paragraph layout, typography, imagery, animation, web pages and graphics all graphic design. It is mostly computer work with an assortment of programs, some free hand work and very mind numbing if you have an interest in actual art. I am close to obtaining an associates degree in the field but am struggling as I like to draw portraits and absolutely hate being asked to make a logo class after class logos, logos, logos aaaahhhhhhhhhh...........

Graphic design is one of those professions that can be applied to all of the above. Some people design letterheads and newsprint. Others design book covers and do layouts in books and catalogs. Someone designed the box your favorite cologne or pimple cream comes in. I recommend Megg's History of Graphic Design for a better understanding of all of the applications of visual communication. Most importantly, a degree in graphic design offers opportunities for a wide range of employment for anyone who loves art, is good at problem solving and wants to make a living doing what they love.

The graphic designer is responcible for taking the idea and putting it together. In the printing industry (the area I'm most fermiliar with) they take the images or idea for the image and have to put it into a workible file for the given job. this varies from scanning a pre-designed image and altering it (say putting it into vector form) or getting a verble description or general idea and having to design from scratch.
Where I worked we did Embroidery and screen printing, the graphic designers were given images in varing stages of completion, they had to finish the image and ether, punch a computer program for the embrodery machines, or break the image into color layers and create vector images of each layer to be printed.
My Boyfriends family owns a flexograph company and it's similar in nature.
