After a game I was approached by a ref. outside in the parking lot. During the game a foul was committed by the opposing team, I thought it should have been a flagrant foul. A blocking foul was called, and to my relief the opposing coach did instruct his player to "take it easy".
Once the game was over the ref. approached me and asked if I was serious about me thinking it should have been a flagrant foul. I said yes, everyone in the building KNEW what was going to happen. Fortunately no one was hurt.

My issue/question is not if the right call was made, but can the ref. approach a coach after a game outside of the gym?

Sure the referee can approach you to talk to you, but if you believe it was offensive to you or he did something that bothered you you should report it. The ref can approach you to have a peaceful conversation with you, but if they started yelling, making rude comments about you, etc. you can report that to the high school basketball association and ask for them to do something about it. I have been playing basketball for over 10 years and have had instances like this... depends what the referees attitude was. Was he cocky, rude, disruptive? if not, it is legal to have a conversation about the game, but only with the coaches.

He just wanted to ask a simple question and didn't seem too aggressive about it so I don't see why not.
