When I first started using eyeliner I was so afraid of poking my eye out I had the same problem of raccoon eyes. The trick for the bottom is to put it on the part of your eye right above your bottom lashes. For the top half, a q-tip with water or a make-up remover on it to wipe off any excess so you can cut down the thickness to your liking, just hold the q-tip slanted upwards so all the eyeliner doesn't smear off.

Try using a darker eyeshadow and an angle brush to apply a thin line of shadow in the same manner you would the eyeliner. I do a thin line of eyeliner and then set it with the eyeshadow by going back over it. The shadow is easier to smudge and it looks smokier without look harsh.

Try plum, brown, or a gray color if black is too harsh.

first of all..dont use liquid eyeliner..that may be your problem if you are?
do it slowly, and carefully..and dont do it all at once..do long strokes. maybe before you do it, put concealer at the bottoms of your eyes so it doesn't smudge. make sure the concealer is dry though. and after you put on your eyeliner, put more concealer on lightly under your eyes.

hey girl! if your eyes were small that's the time you would use eye liner...if it makes you like a zombie try to use the lighter color not the dark color, believe me it really works! in addition to that, if your skin is white you could use the dark color but if your skin is little bit dark try the lighter colors too..

try using a brown instead of black or a soft gray... and don't do it in a line under your eye just go almost half way and smudge it a little. or you can try using an eyeshadow color....
