A gerund is a noun formed by the using the present participle (the -ing form) of a word. All words ending in -ing are not gerunds, because often they are verbs.
I like swimming. (swimming is a gerund)
I was swimming in the ocean yesterday. (swimming is a participle verb)

A verb participle ending in "ing" which acts as a noun.

e.g. Cooking is a favourite hobby of mine. I enjoy cooking. (gerunds)
When I am cooking, I feel happy. Now you're cooking with gas. (verbs)

Not all words ending in "ing" can be gerunds. e.g. sing, bring, amazing. Only verb participles.
