i went in for my 18 week diagnostic ultrasound today hoping to get an idea of my baby's gender, unfortunately after 45 minutes of looking around and two technicians opinions they were unable to determine the sex. And i knew what i was looking for too! three lines girl, turtle- boy, the trouble is, at certain angles you could swear there were 3 lines and at other angles you could see a little penis. Now, i really want to know what i am having, should i wait a couple of weeks and pay for a regular ultrasound out of pocket and hope for a better result? should i spring for a 3d/4d ultrasound? are there any risks involved with the 3d ultrasounds?

i am aware of the costs of both the standard 2d and more expensive 3d and i am fine with paying if it will be worthwhile and if it will determine the gender! My issue is not wanting to inadvertently harm the baby, i just am not aware of the short and long term effects of the procedures and the likelihood of these effects.

LOTS of factors go into determining gender via ultrasound ...are you heavy-set or thin? was the baby breech , or head down???
Truthfully the 3d and 4 d ultrasounds are great fun ..but really wouldn't give you any better a result in determining gender than your typical 2d ultrasound ...however if your paying out of pocket anyway , I say go for the gusto and get the 3D/4D....then you get to have the fun of the 3D experience. You 'll more than likely get more pictures and a DVD if you opt for the later.

Patients need to understand that the 3D ultrasounds are really cool, and a heck of a lot of fun...but diagnostically they are no better than a regular prenatal ultrasound.( with the exception of looking at known facial/limb deformities). the point of your 18 to 22 week ultrasound is to see INTO the fetus and look at all of the organs and make sure that they are developing properly. The 3D doesn't DO that. it's more of a surface rendering. It's a Bonus . Like the cherry on top . The ice-cream sundae is the important part...the cherry just kicks it up a notch. :-)

Have fun , GOOD LUCK , and remember a healthy baby is most important! :-)

Do you have the kind of money to pay out of pocket for another ultrasound? Are you aware of their cost?
