An equivocal result in a pregnancy test occurs when they can say neither positive or negative with any degree of certainty. This usually means that hCG will have been present but only in a trace amount, between 5 - 25 mIU/ml.

In pregnancy testing, hCG under 5mIU/ml is considered negative.

A result of 5-25mIU/ml is considered equivocal.

A result over 25mIU/ml usually released as a positive.

Because hCG basically doubles every 48 hours in the first weeks of pregnancy, if you wait 48 hrs and get tested again, they can look again at the hCG levels and if they are responding normally they should have increased substantially. If the amount has increased less than 60% in 48 hours or is absent in the second test then it's normally assessed that the pregnancy has failed.

You doctor can tell you more.

The levels were borderline between negative and positive. Usually if you're pregnant the HCG levels elevate every 48 hours; therefore when they repeat the blood test you'll have an more accurate anwser. Good luck! Keep us informed.
