Acoustic is a little easier to learnin my opinion, my brother says otherwise (however he's in a band that just signed onto a major label; take his advise) Find a friend who wants to learn with you, you'll be jamin' in no time :]

Try to seek out others who have started to play to learn some basics. Then practice, practice, then practice some more. Your fingers will start to hurt, your wrists & arms will too. Get through this stage and things will start to get less painful. Then practice some more. It won't be easy at first, but you must be patient. If you really want to play well, then you must keep at it, but don't forget to have fun while you learn. There's plenty of help on the Net - chords, tabs, etc.
I've been playing for many years now and I'm still learning, still having fun.
Good luck to you.

Depends on your goals.
Playing neo-punk, Green Day-like guitar, just pick it up & start banging on it senselessly. 15 minutes.
Playing a few simple chords & very simple songs - some finger strength & agility, a breeze, a few weeks.
Serious blues/rock - a few hours a day, a year or two.
Vai/Satriani - if you're over 12 and won't dedicate at least 5 hours a day for the next 5-6 years, don't bother.

The more you practise, the easier it gets. it also depends on the type of music you want to play. Punk and britpop won't present many problems but thrash/speed metal will take hours of practise to master.

go to a music store and get a cd/book that would help you...there is probably stuff on the internet too...use TAB music as opposed to notes (it shows you fingerings)
