Depends what your ineterests are and what time of year. For eating out/social scene: Southbank, Lygon St Carlton, Fitzroy St St Kilda and the pier area in Port Melbourne, Brunswick St in Carlton, Docklands area, and of course heaps of bars and cafes etc in CBD. Going up the Rialto Observation Deck is a great way to see the sights. Botanic Garden especially during summer there are some great outdoor events (movies, plays etc), Arts Centre, MCG and Telstra Dome if you're a sports fan. Melbourne Zoo is great, over summer the Zoo Twilights program is worth a look - food and music in the evenings at the zoo. There is also a lot going on a Federation Square over summer and the international food and wine festival coming up. If you're looking for further out of Melbourne definitely a trip down the Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island and penguins, Yarra Valley wineries and Mt Dandenong....... Some possible websites are www.thatsmelbourne.com.au www.visitmelbourne.com and www.visitvictoria.com for a start..... Hope this helps!

Melourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Tennis centre, Royal Melbourne Zoo, Melbourne Museum, Royal Botanic Gardens, South Bank, Crown Casino, Docklands, Albert Park, St Kilda beach, Melbourne Central, Bourke street mall, Queen Victoria market, Luna Park, Federation square, Royal melbourne Show (only in september), Melbourne in general.

Jump on a free City Circle tram, that takes you all around Melbourne and tells you about what is near each stop, you can get on and off as much as you like. you knly need a met card (ticket) to get the train, tram or bus into the city. best option is to buy an all day ticket and catch the train to Flindrs street Station. that is right in the centre of everyting, and there are tram stops that go to all places right outside the station, as well as the City circle tram. The city circle tram is generally one of the older style trams that is painten a maroon /brown colour, some are still the old yellow and green style. The common public transport trams are now more white or grey, even covered in advertising. the old trams are more rounded and only a single carrage, the new ones have more corners and are often a double carrage tram.

if you want to go just outside melbourne, there is also: Werribee open range zoo, Science works, Williamstown, Great ocean road, Phillip island, yarra valley, Bendigo, Ballarat > Goldfields region

My husband's from the Melbourne area, and we went there for our honeymoon. The best thing that we did was buy the Smart Visit Card. (See http://www.visitmelbourne.com/ and click on "See Melbourne and Beyond" on the bottom right)

Then, just do everything that it pays for, that you can fit into your schedule. These are some of the things we did that I highly recommend, though not all of them were paid for by the card.

-Philip Island (didn't get to see the penguins and have regretted it ever since; get some fish & chips while you're there, too)
-Beaches on the way to Philip Island
-Rialto observation deck and museum/gift shop
-Science museum
-Aquarium
-River tour
-Queen Victoria Market
-Melbourne Zoo
-China Town (I don't know if it's called that, but it should be...the food there is great...especially the Peking Duck!)
-Crown Hotel/Casino/Mall
-Gold Cinema (in Crown)
-Pancake Parlor :)
-The Museum by the old Parliament building
-Flinders Street Station
-Art Museum

Also, if possible, it'd probably be cool to get out to the country to see the towns. You'd definitely get a completely different feel of Australia that way. Walhalla's pretty cool too. Anyway, I think you'll have a blast! I know I did:)

My fave thing to do in Melbs is just to walk and see where it takes you. There are so many art installations in random little allies and the best shopping (undiscovered boutique designers) exists up a lane round a corner down a blind alley, same goes for the nightlife, the best bars are a non-descript door down some random laneway. There are heaps of great standard touristy things to do but I think you get the best cultural feeling for the city if you're not afraid of getting a bit lost.
Enjoy :)

I highly recommend going on a day trip to sovereign hill and maybe going to the top of the Eureka tower, the tallest resedential building in the world.

All the others have pretty much covered the rest of the sights
