It seems like too much ground to cover if you're on one side of your court, and your opponent hits the ball to the other side; how do tennis players manage to return the ball?

I play tennis five hours a day and you wouldn't believe the foot work drills I have to go through. There are also other things that contribute in getting to the ball quick enough.
Smart players will hit their shot to the high percentage area. For instance, if I hit it to your right side, you will most likely hit it back to mine. I know this because hitting the ball diagnol gives you space because the court is "longer" and the net is lower.
So basically you are "predicting" your opponent. But there is always that chance where they hit it where you didn't expect it.

Another thing that I am trained to do is recovery. Depending on where I hit my shot, I always have a certain spot to recover to--which is regularly around the center of the baseline.
And over all that, we are in very good shape :)
Smart tennis players always focus on short sprints and not on long distance running!
I hope this answer helped!

Legwork and reading an opponent's shot.

In professional tennis (when it's pretty much been established that they players can return the ball under most situations) it becomes a strategic battle to knock an opponent off-balance, then volley the ball to the opposite side of the court.

I used to play on professional tennis court when i pratice with tennis players. I know all players are in shape who are serious about tennis. They work hard and have fast leg to running around. Many players have foot drills and leg work on the court and help them running faster. Look at Federer, Hewitt, Nadal, Agassi, and Murray. They have the fast leg but when you see Agassi play a big hit and other players can't return it. Sometime it is tough when players play on surface like hard court (u.s.open, austrilan open, and master series hard court). It is the tough court to play on because hard court is the popular in world.

They use the court to their advantage because of their positioning and footwork. If you are in the proper position every time, the ball will be in your range. It also helps that they are in extremely good condition
