We better think that it is all by design, and not just any design but the one that is the best in the entire existence. For if this is a happy accident then happiness on whose part? I would not be happy for example to know that all this happened just by chance and is not likely to happen again, and that we are just so lucky that this happened for it was so easy for this to not happen at all. If this is an accident then this is the killer. What one earth should then I be happy about? My mind is constantly tormented by the thoughts of my own beginning and the end, that I cannot live without believing that will never come and I will carry on living one way or the other, that I will not die. But when I think like this to eliminate the possibility of an end in my thoughts then I doubt very much about my beginning too - if there is no end then there cannot be a beginning either. But I never stop wondering about things that I do not understand; I keep searching like a hungry child looking for food. The only consolation comes from the belief that it is all an intelligent design and one day we will see it all, that one day we will know the meanings of life, the purpose of living and answers to all our questions.

I'd much rather believe in the teleological argument, rather than in 'accidents' as some scientists would like to argue. There's just too much design and logic to the world for it to have existed by 'chance'. Even the flaws of the universe serve some kind of point - such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Look up Thomas Aquinas' design argument

If we are here by design, there must be a supernatural / occult intelligence who produced the design. However, I have not heard or read any argument that gives any satisfactory account of such a force. So my concussion, when applying 'Occam's razor' is that we came into existence through a series of accidents - happy or otherwise.

We are here very much by the design of our Creator. It may not always seem happy, but it is all pointing to that Creator. Times when we are not happy are meant to draw us closer to Him.

I personally think that (a) higher conscious force(s) purposed our being here; just intuition, there is this inner sense of this personal perspective that i can't explain with words; i think others (and i do a little bit) might believe so because they just want to avoid the discomfort of us being "useless" in the grand scheme of things.
I think that it's hard to say at this stage of mankind evolution but good question though; this question is one of the most fundamental questions that assail human minds since the dawn of time.

Happy accident. Design implies a designer, and there is no evidence for such.

...perhaps our design is the result of a "happy accident"
...or possibly a "happy accident" was the design all along.

neither. it is a consequence of natural law acting within a prescribed environment. We are because we had to be. There was no other choice.
