First the type of router you get needs to be wireless. Second you need to make sure that the computer you are trying to connect to the internet has a wireless card. I also want to add make sure your wireless card and router is the same frequency. Your best bet is to stick to the same brand. If you buy a linksys router by a linksys wireless card. I recommend to you to purchase Belkin. It's really simple to setup and figure out. Third you will still need the modem. The router will be connected in the room with the modem. The modem connects to the router via Ethernet cable. Both modem and router will still need a power source and the modem will still need to be connected to cable or the phone line depending on if you have cable or DSL.

Yes you can but if possible to intall a wire I advise you do so. But what suit your needs and makes you ease, its your decision. Wireless is good especially if you're using laptop cause you can surf any place you want in the area. Hope this makes you decide.
