Pentium is old technology. A Xeon is specifically designed for server applications, so it would be the best choice. You might consider a new dual-core Xeon, which should be based on the incredibly-fast Conroe architecture.

Xeon and pentium are OLD technology. the AMD opteron is the best server cpu, and the Intel Itanium2 is the 2nd best. The Xeon doesn't even come close to those two. Just look up the benchmarks for them.

what is your anticipated server load?

You expecting 1000+ cps?

although for a DB server you want to have more memory.

webserver same thing, how much traffic you expecting, also what technologies are you going to be using? basic html, php, flash etc..
the more crap you use the more Horsepower you need.

Reality is, unless you're doing some high traffic site, you can probably get a dual-core XEON or Opteron (AMD) w/ a buttload of memory and be just fine (and in some situations, even that is overkill). Memory (just like in desktop operation) is going to be the caveat to a successful server.

I suppose you meant to say Xeon, that's what it's designed for...Pentium series is designed for PC desktops.
Look for yourself on the Intel site.
