I am assuming you want to be a merchant marine and not in the navy. The job is lots and lots of hard work and little sleep. There is constant chipping and painting the ship. Cleaning the house. As an entry level person there is lots of dirty jobs that you will get to do. Even with all that you get to visit some of the most interesting and beautiful places in the world. You could join the Navy, then you would be a sailor.
To learn to handle a boat, take seamanship courses, navigation courses and sign on as a deck hand on a sailboat.

depends on what type of sailor you wish to be but you can join the marine college to learn more or you could join the coastguard
