yes the battle of New Orleans was important because it put Andrew Jackson in the spotlight as a hero. My pick would be the Compromise of 1820. The reason why I picked this event was it epitomized the thinking of the time of nationalism and sectionalism and the fight over slavery which would culminate in the Civil War. A lot of controversies would stem from this treaty even though it can't be blamed for them such as the Nullification Crisis of 1832, the theory of Manifest Destiny and popular sovereignity , the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act the Dred Scott Decision and election of 1860. If you look at each of these crises you can see the movement of sectionalism , the battle for the soul of the country between North and South. The Compromise of 1820 was its beginning of tension between north and south.

How about the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States; the expedition of Lewis and Clark, obviously related, is almost as important.

Otherwise, I might say the Monroe Doctrine, since it set the tone of US policy in the Americas for the last 180 years.

well i cannot fully agree with u on this one for the following reasons. when the battle of new Orleans was fought the war was already over.It was a battle in vain if things were already over and they got news of its end after they fought it.Event: move west speaking in terms of America. The person would probably be Andrew Jackson. In europe it would be napoleon and industrial revolution.

I'd go with #2 above: Bonapart both set up Russia as a force to be reckoned with AND established England as THE maritime power for the rest of the 19th century. Thanks Frenchie!
