Too many people!

The problems of the world can be traced back to population. Deforestation, pollution, disease, crime, species extinction and much more are functions of too many people. But the moral and ethical compass that keeps the average man on the straight path is also a function of population. In a small town or village the individual is known and gets a reputation for the sort of person that he is, good or bad (this is the sort of environment tat existed while the collective moral sense was evolving). In the densely populated area (what used to be the cities but is increasingly becoming everywhere) one is rarely likely to be known to any of the people that one might offend or wrong in the course of going about any given day. This 'city mentality' has no downside in a dense population.
