I have 55 gal tank and a 10 gal tank. I have an Oscar in the 55 gal. I was looking into breeding guppies for a nice snack for him. I heard you can get that Easter grass, about 4 or 5 guppies (males and females) add water and of course the tank accessories like a filter and such..and you're good to go. Is this true? If so..which guppies are the coolest/prettiest to have and to breed?

If I were you I would just buy the basic pet store varieties with colors you like, then as they have babies pick out the prettiest male and female to breed the next time. before you know it you'll have some awesome looking guppies!

Better than Easter grass, make a spawning mop or two ( or more) :) Get a ball of yarn like from Walmart any color will do and wrap it around and around a large book. Don't pull it tight just wrap maybe 20-25 times. Stop at the same place you started and cut the yarn. Now tie a small piece tightly around all of the loops at the opposite side from where you started and stopped. Now cut each loop and it will all dangle from the tied part looking like a mop head. Boil these and let them dry. They will sink in your tank or you can tie them to a piece of clean styrofoam cup to make them float. If the get dirt from food and stuff, just wash them your in the sink and your good to go again.

I wouldn't use Easter grass if it's that plastic stuff. Guppies like to nibble on plants and that wouldn't be very good for them to ingest. If you don't want the maintenance of care for life plants, use artificial.

If you're looking to supplement your oscars food, I would choose guppies with red/orange coloration. This could enhance his coloration. Also, try feeding them some shredded carrot or sweet potato before feeding them to him - These veggies will add more carotinoids for his coloring. (Personally, I like turquoise,cobra/snakeskin, and yellow halfblack guppies, but they wouldn't do much for your oscar's coloration.)

I'd also go with just one variety in your breeding tank - guppies will mate with any other guppy and you'll lose the colors and patterns if you mix too many together.

the coolest/prettiest are about 50 bucks a breeding pair. i don't think you want to feed those to an oscar.

here is a page of some more common guppies -- and instead of easter grass try using live plants like java moss.
