The little guy keeps kicking sand around, and it fills up the water dish. He's been darting around the cage and being very active lately. Is this normal? Or is he flippin out for some reason?
Should I give him more sand so he can dig himself a huge hole to play in? There's only about an inch layer in there of coarse wood type sand. Should I have really fine sand in there instead? I'm thinking he wants to cover himself or something.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Sorry I'm using ground walnut shell, not "coarse wood type sand".

Check the temp in the tank, as this is something thy do when they begin to get too hot and have no retreat from the heat. They need to have varying temps throughout the tank so they can regulate their body temp and not be to cold or overheat. They also like to have a place to hide in both a hot and cooler part of the tank. I don't like ground walnut shells or fine sand since they can both cause impactions. I think the Calcisand is a better choice and I have been using it for years with no problems at all.

My leopard gecko acts funny sometimes. Make sure the tank is not to hot and that there is a warmer side and a cooler side. The lizards need to be able to regulate their temperatures. They do this by moving from warm areas to cool areas. Do NOT get extremely fine sand as this can cause an impaction in the lizards digestive system. Make sure you have something for the lizard to hide under also (to "hide" from the light and heat) also if you are using a heating blanket underneath, make sure the sand is not to hot. Remember in the desert it gets cold at night. You could also try reptile bark as it does not get as hot as sand.
