1) Economics. Even today, manufacturers love cheap labour or should I say " Slave Labour"
2) Racism. The African was considered lower than the animals on the plantation.
3) Loss of Power. There were more Africans than whites on many of the plantations. Can you imagine the fear of the reaction of the slaves when they are made free.

Stephen Douglas considered that slavery should continue because he was a slave owner and it fit his economic interests and his fat bank account

He was solely thinking in his convenience and selfish interests. He was not philosophizing about human justice, the human soul nor christian teachings.

When Charles Darwin during his famous travels visited Brazil , and met an intelligent englishman who lived there and owned vast streches of land where hundreds of slaves worked. Darwin commented the injustice of slavery, but the englishman hotly defende the system arguing that blacks did not feel like humans that they have animal like feelings and could be treated as slaves without suffering.

Due to this Darwin had this profound thought that he put down in writing.

"When personal interest comes in, common sense and intelligence go out"

Stephen Douglas wanted slavery to continue because he owned slaves...he sold them and his family had farms that needed free labor such as a slave...

He also feared that the economy of the U.S. would suffer if the slaves were free....tobacco farmers counted on the free workers to survive.....

He also knew that freeing the slaves would mean that we would have thousands of people homeless, without work and he feared they would create crime because they would not be able to support their selves without their owners support..
