Well, I guess I've made up my mind that this would be for the better for my son. He is my first baby and I feel like I shouldn't bring him more pain but my husband is circumsized and I feel my son should be too, I see that there are more pro's than con's... so hopefully I'm doing the right thing.

What kind of tips of caring for that area after the procedure? What kind of creams is recommended? What are some tips to soothe him? What type of clothing should i have him wear? Should I change his diaper after he pees to minimize infection? Any other info you'd like to share I'd appreciate it.

I don't see more pros than cons at all, but I am so glad to hear that you took the time to research things before you made your decision. Congratulations on your new baby boy!

If they do the circumcision at the hospital, the doctor or nurses will tell you how to care for the baby. Make sure they use EMLA cream to numb the area and WAIT till it takes effect. Only then should they inject the area with lidocaine and wait a minute or two but not too long because the lidocaine can cause the area to swell. It is a rare doctor that follows this protocol correctly, generally they just "line 'em up" at 7am and circ them all in about 15 minutes one after the other so they can rush off and do their rounds.

After the circumcision is done, the baby is observed for awhile to make sure the bleeding has stopped, then we use vaseline, bacitracin or sometimes neosporin w/pain relief (a numbing agent) depending on what the pediatrician recommends. If the plastibell is used, the peds sometimes say the vaseline isn't necessary, but I like to use a good dime sized glob anyway every time the diaper is changed to create a barrier so it doesn't burn so much when he pees.

I usually place the glob of whatever is used on the diaper itself in front of the penis, then close the diaper. I don't touch the penis itself because it is an open wound. The hospital is a dirty place, even the OB floor and I wouldn't want to give a baby an infection. I wear gloves and never touch it directly - you shouldn't either. Unless he gets a large amount of poop on it (unlikely) you shouldn't either until it is well healed. Don't try to clean it with anything while it's healing, the wound will heal very quickly, newborn babies are amazingly fast.

Generally right after they will be fussy then sleep deeply for a few hours. Just hold him, give him extra TLC and nurse him a lot right afterwards. You can give him a little infant Tylenol if you like, ask the pediatrician for the prescription and the dosing. Use the vaseline with every diaper change for a few days, he will generally heal nicely without complications.

There is really nothing too it--the bandage is usually off when you bring the baby home--when changing just put some A & D on it lightly push skin back and do your diaper up--I totally agree with you I had a hard time deciding what to do but its a lot cleaner less infections etc. Smart decision! Good luck

After circumcision, the penis of the baby is usually wrap with a vaselinized gauzed to put pressure to the site preventing bleeding and so that the gauze would not adhere to the circ site.It should be removed after 24 hours.Separate the legs, dont tape the diaper or loosen it up,change it as soon as gets wet or with poop, clean site with betadine or apply the prescribed antibiotic ointment to circ site to prevent infection and proper cleaning of the perineal part is also observed.Report for any signs of bleeding and infection like redness, swelling and fever.

Our son was circumcised at about 1 week of age in the pediatrician's office. When we arrived they rubbed a cream on it to numb it and we waited about a half hour for it to go numb. In the room they then laid him on a thing that didn't let him move his legs. We were allowed to be right there to comfort him. Even though he was completely breast fed, they gave him a little bottle to drink from while they did the procedure. He didn't cry during the procedure which took about 10 minutes. They wrapped it in a gauze.

On the way home from the doctors he started to cry really hard. We gave him tylenol. .3ml every 6-8hours. Make sure you ask your doctor about the dosage because it's based on weight.

We rubbed vaseline on every diaper for a week (prevents the skin from sticking to the diaper). He cried really bad every time he urinated for the first 2 days. On the 2nd day he got the gauze dirty (we were instructed to leave it on for 3 days and not to give a bath). We took off the gauze carefully on day 2 and poured warm water over it. He seemed to get better quickly after that. After about 4 days he didn't cry because of it anymore. He was almost completely healed when we went back to the doctors 1 week after the procedure.

You should ALWAYS change a diaper as soon as the child wets or messes it.

LOL no need to explain yourself.

Our 5 boys have been done and all we did was wash the area with warm clean water twice a day. And be sure it pat it dry.

We have no complications what so ever with ours.

Good luck.

It is really unfortunate that you had a son.

I pity him.

If you think mutilation is so great, why don't you go get 70% of your "pleasure" nerves removed.

You know one day your grown son might come to you and ask you. "Mom why did you mutilate me?"

Don't think it will happen. Every day more and more men are resenting what has been done to them. Who knows in 20 or 30 years your day might come. Don't be surprised.
