Okay, one of my hamsters was nice from the day I adopted it (baby and now adult) and I just bought a new one from the pet store. The one from the pets is nasty. I’ve let them play with each other and the sweet one (gumdrop) always is nice, and the mean one (Minty) is mean and always bites gumdrop! He squeals and I quickly take them apart. Minty is not tame and I don’t like him. I want to give him back to the pet store and get a refund. Should I?

Most hamsters despite what people say are not good when they are put together, hamsters are loners. If Minty is picking on Gumdrop seperate them. If he's bitting you also then I'd say take him back to the petshop. My nana got a bad infection from a hamster bite and had to have medication and all and it took a long while for the swelling to go down.

To my knowledge (my husband and I have done lots of research on both hamsters and mice), hamsters, whatever the breed is, should be housed separately. Most, if not all hamsters become aggressive/territorial when put together, especially males. We have had 2 females (1 passed) and they have never been in the same cage together. When they are young and from the same litter, they can go together, but only for a certain amount of time then they need to be separated.

As for bringing it back to the store... to my knowledge, you cannot return a hamster or mouse to a pet store and expect to get your money back.... You may get something back for the hamster, IF it's sick or dies within 30 days (I think that's right... Petsmart gives you a paper that you sign that allows you to bring it back if it becomes sick after so many days.....)

Good luck and please keep your hamsters separate...

I may be wrong, but I seem to have heard that dwarf hamsters are meant to be kept by themselves. I would try keeping your hamsters apart and slowly work on gaining your new hamster's trust and see if his disposition improves. Then try and decide if you want to return him.

Good luck!

if you take it back to the pet store they will just sell it to somone else. take it to a humane society or shelter that will tame it before they adopt it out.
