and why should they colonize it

lol. The Moon don't belong to US .The Earth already suffer from massive exploitation and soon yes, we will remain without oil but we have a brain and we MUST invent something new and why not ,more ecologic .
And now back to your question. I think US want to colonize the Moon but is to expensive to maintain a profitable activity there. I hope one day we could colonize other planet but for now that's just a dream.
We have 2 of most dangerous threats to human race :
1. 99942 Apophis (asteroid)

If we live the first one the second will kill us all if we don't make a change in our lifestyle and than will be nobody to colonize the Moon.

yes,eventually we would have to and economically exploit the moon as well,liking mining and manufacturing as well. As any half idiot knows,this small earth has so many resouces,oil being a real good exsample.We catually have the technology to colonize the moon even now,but just getting men and material out to Earth orbit is right now really exspensive and cost pro hibative,so a cheaper way to get to orbit must be found before the U.S. can finally kickstart its way to the moon and beyond.

If you mean should the US place a permanent presence there so as to "claim" the moon and it's resources...
Sorry, they/you can't afford that. A violation of International Law that serious would result in some rather nasty things, and the US can't afford that...her economy hasn't recovered from the Great Depression yet.
If you mean place a colony/outpost there so as to act as an international base for further exploration of the Solar System...sure.
