HIV is a RNA virus.

I am surprised by the amount of people confused by your question or answered wrong. HIV is a retrovirus and retroviruses are RNA viruses.

It does not matter how brief or lengthy your oral sex session was, STDs are transmitted in milliseconds. All of your test results are inconclusive and you should consider them garbage. Of course they came back negative. That is expected. HIV does not show up in the bloodstream until 3 months after exposure. It's been 3 weeks? So mid October, like the 15th, go and take a HIV test again to be sure whether or not you are really negative. You didn't just sleep with that one law student. Imagine the 5 other guys she hooked up with. And the 5 girls each of them hooked up with. And the guys they all hooked up with. Get the idea? Anyway, your results taken 3 months after exposure will be accurate, and you will know for sure your HIV status. 23 days is way too soon. The results will come back negative even for a HIV+ person that soon. props to you for wanting to get tested and stay clean PS, you can save yourself a lot of heartache and HIV scares in the future if you only have sex with people whose sexual history you know and trust. In my opinion, it's worth it rather than potentially contracting HIV for life. Hope I helped, good luck! Fingers crossed those results come back negative in October EDIT: "Many experts would say you didn't need to test in the first place." BS, actual experts would encourage him to get tested. Also, you do not need to get tested every 6 months for 6 years. That's unreasonable, and symptoms will show up. I personally know a few people who are HIV+, so I speak from their experiences. It is honestly best to go in 3 months after exposure, as that is the minimum time period before you can get accurate results. One of my friends' viral load is so low, it is almost undetectable. When he took the test immediately it was negative. A few months later, sure enough, it was positive. All I'm saying is it's better to be safe than sorry. Just go October 15th and that will put a rest to everything. You'll get some nice, accurate results and be able to move forward having learned a lesson about one night stands.

RNA. I thought all viruses only had RNA and that's why they have to replicate and not reproduce like traditional biological organisms?

see you first have to look at the charistics of both RNA and DNA. Then you can conclude what it is. But to anwser your question it is RNA but it is known to be DNA.

HIV is a virus.

DNA is a nucleic acid which contains all your genes and coding for your body to work the way it does.

RNA is also a nucleic acid used to copy your DNA or parts of it for certain purposes.

If you get HIV then parts of your DNA could be affected.
