It's a battle flag, and people need to stop stereotyping southerners as racist hicks. The truth of the matter is that there were plenty of slaves up north, too, regardless of whether they were freed first or not.

Many people use it as a symbol of where they come from. Like the South for example. As far as it being a symbol of racism due to the KKK using it.....the KKK also uses the Christian cross as a symbol, but everyone seems to be ok with that. We also don't seem to have a problem with Japanese-Americans flying the red circle, even though they tortured people and attempted to conquer the world. That doesn't mean the people "currently" of Japanese descent are going to behave in the same manner.

That being said, most people are badly misguided on the true history of the Civil War. The CSA army was integrated before the Union army, and the blacks fighting for the southern states earned the same pay as white soldiers. This was not the case in the north. This is just one example of many untold truths about the Civil War, the flags, and what they supposedly mean.

In the south, a few people say it's a symbol of the confederacy and their heritage, but it feels like a symbol of hate when you see it here. It will always be associated with the KKK for me, since when I've seen them march (the KKK like to have "recruiting marches" every few years here in NC, I kid you not) they like to have a confederate flag with them. So even if some people don't mean the flag to be hateful, it's hard not to when the KKK carries it like a banner for "their cause".

The flag is a symbol of Southern Heritage. Sadly a lot of people see it as sybolic of the KKK a hate group.

It really has more to do with the viewers perceptions than the symbol itself.

Heritage.
My preference to be plainspoken, accent, and social belonging.
I assume that by hate you reference slavery. (am I right?).
I do not and never will accept slavery. It was plain wrong. Too me it can speak of both. How can it not with so many people threatened or offended by it. It's sad but also understandable.
Many great hardships were suffered by American slaves. But not only Americans slaves suffered great hardships. Some may ask me if any non-slaves were ever whipped. The answer would be Yes. Irish immigrants were beaten in the early American military by English settlers. A good movie to see that involves this story is called "One Man's Hero". It stars Tom Berringer.

It's a flag that represents an era when the US was at war with itself. Depending on where you were brought up, it will have different meanings.

Everytime I see one I think of the hate. I have get to see anyone and I do mean anyone fly or display that flag that did not let a racist comment come out of their mouths other than when they are on television(where others can see)trying to defend their 'heritage'. That flag's heritage to me is deeply rooted in hatred and bigotry. Now that is just my opinion. May God Bless U.
