IMHO, if you're too young to have a job then you're too young to have a cell phone. That's what phone cards are for. Kids need to be taught to earn what they are given instead of having everything handed to them because otherwise they'll probably end up on a street corner with a cardboard sign begging people for money that they should be earning.

Yes, I think its rediculous that a 12 year old would even need to own a cell phone....I just got a cell phone this year, and I am 18 years old.

There is no need for a 12 year old to have a cell phone, unless in case of an emergency.

Hello,
I got my 10 year old son a cell phone for emergency purposes when he started riding the bus home from school. He is a very responsible boy and it really made me feel comfortable that he had something on the way home from school. He would call me as he walked home and when he got into the house safe and sound. If your child is responsible, 12 years old is not too young. Most 12 year olds in my son's school have phones. As long as you limit the conversations so they don't use up all the minutes, I feel it is fine to give them a phone, as long as you set limits and expectations. If they abuse it, the phone goes away.

If you are in need of a cell phone with a plan, you can check out the site below, they carry many of the hottest cell phones for FREE with a new service plan. We got our phones there and we were very happy with the service and the very cool free phones.

If you're going to leave your child alone and want to give them a cell phone for emergencies only, I think that's okay. But when I see a 12 year old walking around with their cell phone chit-chatting with their friends, demonstrating how cool they think they are...it makes me shake my head. Part of my job includes being a cellular representative. In one case a mother wanted to give her son a pre-paid cell phone so he could make long distance calls to his father (parents were divorced) and they didn't use long distance for anything else. This son of hers was 10 years old but very responsible for his age and didn't see it as a toy. In this case, I viewed it as appropriate. It all depends on the child in question.

It really depends on the child. If he or she does not really deserve it, then he or she should not be allowed to get one.

I would get him or her a cell phone for emergency's only. Because there are times where kids need to get in touch with their parents. The best bet is to go with a prepaid phone. This way, there is no contract and the kid can use his or her allowance to buy more minutes.

Yes, I think they are.
I got mine at around that age, and I ended up losing mine...
And besides, once they get it, they will use it to call their friends and waste their minutes so you will be charged more, even when they could have just used their home phone.
I think the chances are more likely for them to use or break them.

But if you think they need one, I'd say get them a Firefly ((I think that is the new one where you can only call a few people??)) Or a Tracphone where they would have to buy their own minutes..
