My kids love it when I make lanterns from popcans. Fill them 3/4 with water and freeze them (this gives them structure). Then (wearing gloves because thy are cold now) rub off the log with steel wool. Using a small nail or push pin, make holes in a shape. Let the water melt and drain. Cut the top open and drop a candle in. Its really versatile and is a lot of fun to make different holiday lanterns etc from them.

Used tin cans of all sizes can be remade to hold your pens, pencils, scissors, or even kitchen spatulas and spoons. Remove the paper carefully and use that for a template to add either fabric or paper to the outside.
Use some for candle holders.
Pringles cans can be silos for a western theme.
Oatmeal cans can be a drum or storage for Barbie clothes.

Depending on the sizes of your glass....
go to the beach and find pretty rocks, shells, or washed up glass (colored of course) fill up your glass jars with water for a pretty centerpiece or decoration for a kids room, or anywhere in the house really.
It looks really pretty if you get several different size jars and have them all grouped together.

I've seen a really cute hat someone made from different colored plastic grocery bags...somehow crocheted? It was adorable and I'm sure it was a good rainhat!

you can make jump ropes from bread sacks...you cut them into strips.....connect them by tieing them together or double sided tape works also....so make three strands and tie them together at the top...then you just braid them together.....you can get everyone you know to help save the sacks...this is somethingthat kids really like to do.
you can roll up old newspapers and make log cabins out of it....kids really like this and it lets them be very creative. can always make bird feeders from plastic
glass is great for mosaics or if you want to make stepping stones you can put glass and lots of bottle tops and such in them.

I would rather focus to the recycling as recycling as an art project, which might also produces other garbage.
