At 18 years of service, it will probably be best to consider replacing it. The cost of replacing aging parts and the inconvenience of breakdown will eventually make the decision much easier. You have already reached the point where you should worry about the heat exchanger if it's gas, propane, or oil fired. This can be a deadly problem and should be annually (at least) checked for your safety.

Newer furnaces are much more energy efficient than the one you have.

No do not replace it simply because it doesnt turn on. The thermostat is what turns the furnace on. Crank it up a a few degrees if you want comfort.

lots of furnaces are 18 years old and working just fine and safely too. Just because a furnace is 18 years old doesnt mean its to be junked out. Dont be frieghtened by scare tactics either.

Probably your problem is a very DRY house. I suggest you get yourself a room humidifier and increase the moisture in your air. that iwll make it feel warmer for you.

That was a good idea to replace the furnace with 18 years old to reduce chance of get kill by carbon monoxide, usually they do replace every 10-12 years old.
