I'm looking for a cheap, reliable car and my friend happens to be selling this 1985 BMW 735i for ~$6000 the mileage is like 214K or something. He has recently replaced and cleaned almost everything (except the engine, which has been replaced once a few years ago I think) .. well is this car a good deal? Before he sells it, he is also going to respray it, clean it, customize it and just make it look nicer. btw, it has a CD player, nice sound system but no moniters or GPS

214,000 miles on a 21-year-old high-end BMW means that . . . unless the car's been completely restored . . . a LOT of things will be going wrong. And the parts and labor will be expensive. Bottom line, it doesn't sound like a very good deal to me. Unless you're really into having something exotic, best bet is a later model, lower mileage unpopular Japanese model -- Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Mazda, etc. . . . or a well taken care of U.S. model; same idea . . . go for the less popular models. Hondas and Toyotas, in contrast, tend to be WAY overpriced as used cars.

Listen to the others!!!! NOOOOO!!!!! It does not matter how much work has been done to that car or how nice it looks or what the current owner has invested in it. It's still a 22 year old High millage sled. Wholesale the car is worth maybe $500.00 a dealer may give a pity trade of $1000.00 for it, but he will not be able to retail the auto and it will most likely wind up in an auction somewhere. Not to mention it has the 3.5 ltr engine in a 7 series auto. That 3.5 could just barely push a 5 series much less the bigger 7, if it were an L it would be even worse.

Please do yourself a big favor and run away from that car like it were on fire! $6000 dollars can buy a person a very nice preowned car, but that's not the one.

Good luck and hope I've helped, take care.

I just looked up the value of this car and it is $1000. Do NOT pay $6000 for it.
I would never buy a vehicle that has that many miles on it, especially something that is expensive to maintain and fix, like a BMW.

Don't pull the trigger on that deal. Nice car......about twenty years ago. That ride sounds like a mess and if it breaks Beamers are WAY HUGE expensive to fix. That car's niceness is ALL USED UP!

Find a nice 94-96 Z-28 or Firebird. GOOD investment, fast car and easy, less expensive to service.

Yes all classic BMW's are very reliable cars, my parents had owned this one for 20 years and it still works perfectly.

6 grand is the mid- to high end asking price around here. It sounds like the car has been well cared for, but remember BMW stands for Bring Money With.
