I was reading a college guide book and I came across the term

Most rankings are based off of the US News rankings that they do every year. Third tier is the schools that didn't make the cut into the top 100 in the nation or so.

It's not too big a deal. Being at a third tier only really starts to hurt more in certain professions that require grad schools (like law). Being at a low ranked med school in the US doesn't really matter too much.

It is one whose students do not score as high as tier 1 or 2 on their SAT's or ACT's, student tend to have lower GPA's also, and a less stringent admission process. They accept a higher percentage of the students who apply. It is also the rating system in place for schools. Tier 1 schools are Harvard. Yale, Princeton, etc. Tier 1 schools have high tuition rates and very selective admission practices. They may accept only 1 out of every 100 students who apply.
