I've been playing the piano since I was 4 (I'm now 38)
I went to music school, and then onto music college.
I now work as a freelance pianist.
I'm still learning new things about technique and interpretation.
It takes a lifetime to master the piano (or any other instrument for that matter).
The moment you stop learning is the moment you give up trying.
As for sight reading, just start with the easy stuff, and keep on doing it.
There are techniques for sight reading, but they're a bit complicated to write down here.
Keep practising, and persevere.

That all depends on several things. Your abilities in the first place, your devotion & interest in learning & practising, the ability of the teacher to teach what you need to learn -- when you need & are ready for it, and how good a match they are for you.

Do you play any other music? It depends on what you want to play. I can't sight read, but I learnt by getting a book of music that I knew and figured it out by my self. If I can do that I don't see why you can't. It's easy to play a few things like Neil Young on the piano but Beethoven is a different story. Best I can say is have lots of patients and practice. Good luck!

Just practice, sight reading just comes after a few years of playing. You can never master an instrument....especially piano and guitar. Jimi Hendrix is the exception.

A lifetime. Get a private teacher; preferably through your local's university's music department.
