the US didn't take over Puero Rico, it was a territorial aquisition from Spain after the War. The US got Puerto Rico, the Phillipines, Guam, and I believe Cuba. Currently Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US

something called the spanish-american war of 1898 made puerto rico, et al, possible for the usa. cuba, too. reasons behind it all? well, spain dropped the ball & the usa picked it up so why not. with other countries going into the colonies business, the usa thought it about time for the usa to expand, too. good reasoning behind it, i'd say. the lot of puerto ricans before america were dubious at best. america elevated the status and it certainly improved after the cuban revolution of 1960. where cuba was the star of the caribbean, puerto rico took over nicely. not all problems were solved but with the influx of capital ($$$), all things were or will be tended to one time or another. so you ask about america's motive(s)? fuggitaboutit!
