yes, you can run regular 87 or 89 octane fuel. however, keep in mind that BMW engines are designed for high octane fuels because of their high compression ratio. there are knock sensors that will detect that you are using lower octane fuel and the engine management system will compensate by retarding spark timing. by doing so, you will lose performance and engine efficiency, and hence also lower fuel economy (less MPG).
in the end, you won't save much money by using lower octane fuel, because you'll just be paying for it in less miles per gallon. but, if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere and you need fuel, and 87 octane is all you can get, you can certainly use it to get yourself to your destination.
my personal recommendation is to use 91 or 93 octane fuel as much as possible unless you have no other options.
oh, and by the way, using higher than 95 octane fuel won't gain you anything as the engine management system will not be able to take advantage of higher octane unless you have custom tuning.

you'll likely finally end up spending as a lot as you save with more affordable gasoline, decrease octane is a lot less gasoline powerful and your vehicle wont preform besides, my BMWs (ninety 5 525i and 03 x5) sense slow without larger octane. the longer time period outcomes that putting wide-spread gasoline would reason on the vehicle Im no longer positive of, yet i imagine its acceptable to position in a larger octane factor, ot what ever is reccomended on your vehicle. (i trust maximum BMWs require ninety one or above?) I rigidity a ninety 5 525i each day and for 4 years became filling up with plus gas (87 octane). at the same time as i began utilizing genuine classification gas (ninety 3 octane) about a month in the past i realized an significant distinction interior the preformance and gasoline mileage.

no no and no. Every bmw in 2000 requires premium fuel.
regular fuel contains impurities. These purities make the fuel burn unevenly and slower.
Another issue with impurities, has to do with sensors, injectors, exhaust systems. a buildup of impurities on these sensors will effect performance, and you will have to replace many things later on.
BMWs have high performance engines. They have a higher compression ratio. This means that since it is a higher, faster compression, it needs fuel that can burn quickly, and regular fuel does not have suffecient time to burn. the result will be what they call detonation. Detonation happens, when the fuel in the cyl doesnt fully burn, and ignites in an uncontrolled manner. It can destroy your motor.
Youre going to end up spending more on fuel, but spending an extra $.15 at the pump could save you from thousands of dollars in repairs in the future.
Also, there is an animation on http://www.howthingswork.com, that shows you what happens inside your engine when its designed for premium fuel, and you use regular.

If it says to use premium, then only use premium.
If you can afford a bimmer, than you can afford a few extra bucks each time you get gas.

Its best to use high octane fuel as that's what the engine is designed for. also this will decrease your fuel consumption and reduce the bad emissions from your car
