I assume people obsess over what is going on in celebrity's lives is because either they're bored, or concentrating on other people's lives helps them to ignore their own problems.

Its the same reason women like "bad boys" although they hate them. They let their emotions get the better of them. Almost all women, some who probably even posted in here, actually pay attention to tabloids and follow these issues, even though they hate hearing about them. They love to hate.
Ex: Woman is in line at register. She sees a magazine that reads "Paris Hilton flashes old man at grammys." She shakes her head in disgust and complains about how "all they do is write about the bad things that go on" but she still buys the magazine.
If the magazine cover would have said "Jessica Simpson won hottest female performance at the awards ceremony" do you think anyone would buy it?
Thats what sucks about being a guy: you are the magazine. If you are a good guy, husband, and father (the headline about Jessica Simpsons award ceremony), you get rejected because you dont make the women mad. Apparently women are interested with things that make them mad, it gives them something to talk about.
...they cant just talk and have a good time with men they want to get romantic with...
unless intoxicated, but thats a whole other story
I heard from one source, that if women married their best male friends, that they would have the best, long lasting relationship.
but most women dont agree with this (they may say they do, but when it comes the time for action, they dont). they want a man that they can see themselves making out/having sex with, they shun relationships with guys who are their friends.
So now, us men are in a state of confusion on what women want.
If women would stop going after bad boys, who they have no future with, everything will be solved. Women will understand what good comes out of dating a good guy, and good guys get what they deserve.
Sorry for going a little off track.

It is human nature to be interested in people that have (made it big), whether it be in business, arts and humanities, the entertainment industry including sports or whatever.
People can somehow get inspiration from these people. When one of these choose few falls from grace, some people take great delight while others get defensive or depressed.
This interest with others is a way for some to forget about their own everyday troubles.
You are right that they will not help you pay your bills, but they may give you some rest from worrying about them.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how my interest in tabloids keeps you from being a productive person. Fella, if you're not paying your bills it isn't because I'm interested in the death of Anna Nicole. In ending, as long as I'm not coming to you to pay my bills then I should be able to watch, and read what ever I want.

they have a really big problem and are going to get health issues. If they read or watch all this stuff they will want to become like them. But this could lead to bad things happening. I dont care wat the magazines or other media says. Its okay to read and watch it a bit but dont become obsessed.
