You are right. There is a lot of talk about China all the time. Most of it is hype and not real. While there are a few sporadically developed cities that have modernized. In large, the country is still very backward. If you don't believe me just drive outside of a major Chinese city.

One of main reasons that there is a lot of hype is that China's economy has been growing more quickly than other countries. However, considering how backward China was to begin with , it isn't surprising that they can grow more quickly. The Chinese tends to be smart, dedicated, and hardworking, so that's why there has been sustained growth. In the United States and other Western Countries, we typically work approximately 8 hours a day; the Chinese, however, works 12 hours. If the United States really wanted the economy to grow quicker it can EASILY do the same thing. So much of the hype is really hot air and journalist trying to sell newspapers.

It is undeniable that the China is gaining ground, but becoming the world's greatest superpower is a bit overblown. Overtime, China's economic growth will slow down just like many other developed countries.

Because in order to get financing AND public approval for his war in Iraq, George Bush got China to buy HUGE amounts of US national debt, by handing over much of our manufacturing base to them.
They are using the money they make to buy investments and give economic development grants all over Africa and the middle east - China's influence is growing...ours is waning.

Many are calling for the US to pull back and quit sending foreign aid to countries that "don't do what we ask".

If Bush had come to the taxpayers by putting the war in the budget instead of hiding it in "special" budgetary sessions - he would have lost the support of single-issue tax-cut Republicans. So he sold us out and has actually weakened the US instead of creating the Empire that was supposed to come from the neocon policies.
