It's necessary if you want scientific advancements that can improve your life. You may decry them testing drugs on mice now, but when you get terminally ill and require some medicine I doubt the first thing out of your mouth is going to be "were any animals harmed in the making of this cure?" If you don't support animal testing, you're putting animal rights above human rights.

My opinion is is that if you can't get any humans to volunteer to have done to them what humans do to animals, the animals shouldn't be tested either. As you point out, their participation is involuntary, they have no say in the matter.
The problem is that the human race wears "species blinders." Humanity's number one concern is with humanity. We eat animals, we treat them cruelly, we kill them for sport. Dogs and cats and a few other domesticated species have finally gotten some limited protection under the law, but for the most part, unless the animal is on an endangered species list (most probably thanks to us humans), it's open season.
In defense of scientists, though, they are just the tools. The people wielding those tools (and the money), are the selfish (greedy) ones. Scientists just do what they do best - scientific study. And even though you might think it would be nice if science had a sense of morality, that is not the definition of science. Indeed, feelings and bias get in the way of scientific research.

If only people respected life then there would not be the chaos. animals have a life too and it reflects our attitude that if we enjoy killing animals, we love killing ourselves because we have no awareness for others.
plus science is just an explanation for something based on theories which revolve around controlled and limited experiments. like if i wanted to prove if salinity kills plants, i would need to have a sample which does not have salt and compare that with samples which do have salt added. and it can only be false if a new theory has better accurate results.

While we're discussion this particular situation I have just finished eating a nice pork chop and had a hamburger with fries earlier which many like you have done recently. Have you ever thought of how these animals were put to rest - It was not with a bed time story. Did you have to have the burger, bacon, ham, ect????

There is not always an alternative way, but it is relatively cost efficient, and plus, not everyone can do it. you have to be certified and get permission to do anything in the US. Most animal testing is used to test things that bring human development. Usually so much testing is required, that not using animal testing, and using alternative measures, would take too much time and money. So animal testing is in itself an alternative to human testing.

It's very cruel. I have an idea! Why not do testing on death row inmates instead! Murderers sit on death row for years, draining our tax dollars. They might as well earn their keep while they're there. In my opinion, they gave up their rights when they decided to take the life of another.

It's wrong, especially for cosmetics. Torturing poor animals so we can look beautiful is cruel and selfish!

Unfortunately, most people do not think of animals as living beings. They think they have no feelings. I happen to know that they do. My cat can hold a grudge and turn his head away from me when I talk to him when he's mad at me. That's called feelings.
