I'm probably going to get lots of thumbs down for this, but I can honestly say that Scorsese films don't do much for me. I mean I recognize that he is a great film maker and he has put together some amazing casts - The Departed is one of the best ensemble casts ever assembled. The problem is I walk out of most Scorsese films feeling kind of blah. I just don't connect with the movies.

For the record, I have seen just about every Scorsese film except Mean Streets (and that's in my Netflix cue). I recently watched Raging Bull and while De Niro is one of my favorites, but I didn't really like the movie. I think part of it is the whole loser after the glory theme that Scorsese uses so often.

Last night I finished watching The Last Temptation of Christ. It would almost be fair to say I hated it. I'm not a student of the Gospels or of the Bible in general, but I know the basic story. I don't even know what Martin was trying to say in that movie except perhaps that Jesus was slightly (ok, more than slightly) insane.

If I had to pick one, The Aviator would be my favorite Scorsese. DeCaprio was amazing as was Cate Blanchette. It's the only one of his movies that I have any desire to see again. Oh, and I forgot Bringing out the Dead. I thought that was pretty good but I need to see it again.

Ok, I've said my piece. Feel free to give me those thumbs down.

My call is for Raging Bull as a total cinematic achievement - stunning visually and emotionally.

Rather than Top 5, look for the subsequent voters to confirm the following Top 4:
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
Mean Streets and
Taxi Driver.

The real argument is what rounds out the Top 5. Just to be different, I'll say The Last Temptation of Christ, but I'll probably be the only one.

Taxi Driver
The Departed
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
Casino
Kundun
The Aviator
The Last Temptation of Christ
Mean Streets
Gangs of New York
King of Comedy
The Last Waltz

Out of all those...How can you make a list of the best...They're all great...Some may have more emotion or a different style, but they are all true Scorsese and some of the best films ever made

I'm going to have to say that I'm not a Martin Scorsese fan. When i think of the movies that he has made I automatically get depressed. His movies are so dark and such downers. They are either bloodfests or snoozefests. I can appreciate the artistic value of his work and can definitely understand why some people do really enjoy his work, but I am definitely not one of them. If I HAD to choose a favorite film of his I would probably say...oh wait, I've never actually gotten all the way through any of his films...
