I've seen so many spell it "Amerika" or "Amerikka". What is the reason behind this? Are these people just stupid or is this supposed to be some sort of bizarre insult to the American people?

Amerika is the correct spelling in German. I think there are two possibilities:
1.) A native speaker of German, uncertain of the spelling (sometimes we have a 'c' where they have a 'k', sometimes we have a 'k' as well)
2.) An attempt to evoke Nazis with a German spelling, or the Klan with 'Amerikkka'

Neither. I wonder how many Canadians you've actually met and from what demographic. I can say that as a Canadian I don't think that it was meant as an insult. Some people aren't good spellers, dyslexic, etc. However there is the occasional assshole who has no respect. Next time I run into an American who spells Canada wrong I'll remember that Canadians make mistakes too.

I have never heard of Canadians spelling America other than the correct way.
Europeans spelling it with a k is understandable.
People are stupid to assume there is an intended insult or to claim that this is done by "so many".

It is the correct spelling in many languages. Just as Anglos for so long insisted on saying Peking instead of Bejing, or we say Sweden instead of Sverige, or any of the other non-USA countries have their own names for their countries and we have the ones by which we know them.
Why do USA-Americans think they are the only Americans? South Americans are Americans too. Canadians are North Americans as well as Canadians.
It's all about perspective and personal prejudice.

Europeans have so many different Languages and have theire own way of naming a Country. In Canada there is the French Canadiens and they say Amerique.Amerika is German
