you can check the better business bureau, the have a site online. I find that they are not that helpful and even if a customer has a bad reputation they may have not been reported.

I would check online by typing the company's name in. Chances are if they have a bad reputation, it's easier to find out than if they are doing a good job. People always rant and rave if they had a bad experience, but may not if everything was ok for them.

I'm not sure what reputable means but if you really want to know if a site can be trusted, then look at the company name and there should be a little (r) next to it. That means it is secure and whoever has this, it means that it can be trusted (I'm about 80%-90% sure!

The Better Business Bureau is one good source. Also ask the company for some referrals of past customers. If they pressure you to buy from them, or make claims that seem too good to be true, you probably want to look elsewhere.

Try the Better Business Bureau; Secretary of State should have filed documents too.

Internet, friends, family.

If it's a big or important purchase, then perhaps you need to consult a lawyer or Private Investigator.
