At what age can you put a blanket on baby without risking them being smothered?

I didn't until my son was closer to a year old, but I was very protective. A comforter is so bulky and can get over there head so much easier than a sheet. I just always dressed my son in pajamas so he was warm, but not covered. He is four now and I will still pull the blanket down to his chest if I see it over his head.

Well technically you can try at one year but mine never kept still long enough for a blanket to do any good. If you mean a little 12 inch square blanket just to snuggle with, we introduce them to our babies at about 5 months. For the first couple months I go in and take it out of the crib after they fall asleep.

When they're young (infant) you can tuck it in tightly around the mattress so they can't get it loose and up around their head. Once their able to roll on their own they generally have more control to keep it off their head. Really, you should just try to keep the temperature plenty warm and not use a blanket until after the age of 1.

They covered the preemie babies in the hospital, so I did the same when he came home. He had a blanket from day one. He still has his special blanket 5 yrs later from when he came home that he sleeps with.

oh really lol i didn't know that! i never got told anything about blankets being dangerous for babies lol.. my son had one from when he was newborn (he was born in winter) and he was fine with it, just used to tuck the bottom of the blanket in to the end of the cot and on the sides too.. he used to co-sleep with me alot though...

at a minimum, they need to be able to easily turn over, both front to back and back to front. But I wouldn't do it. A blanket sleeper is still safer.
