Like Rajnikant is dark why do people virtually paint him white? The African-Americans in America don't do that. See movies like Nutty Professor,Doctor DooLittle,Norbit. Vadivelu looks fine with his kind of make-up and Vivek has his original fair skin. People should apply make-up for a smooth texture on the skin and too make some areas of the face visible to the camera. Don't you agree? we should abolish this kind of racial thing.

hi ,
i'm from andra pradesh(hydrabad) but presently living in chennai

i completely agree with you, fair skin has got nothing to do with acting if you canreach out to people's hearts with your acting and make magic on screen you'd be a great actor. and besides the south indians have very nice features of the face like eyes etc. most of the north indians only have the so called "advantage" of fair skin. and then agin this whole fairness thing is more a burden on actresses. the actor can look like an idot from the streets but the actress is "expected" to look glamourous.

Long back , a meeting was organised in my home town and our Late PM Rajiv Gandhi attended the public meeting but I could not make it due to work. Later many people informed about the meeting and they started talking how much coloured Rajiv was and they never uttered a word about what he conveyed in the meeting. Colour preference occupy the minds of people in Tamilnadu. MGR was a man with a fair colour complexion and if he was not , it might have been difficult for him to taste success.
But with the arrival of party like PMK cinema galmour is being put aside and it is a welcome step.
But Ashwin, you question and forget about the survival of the prospects of cosmetic companies that have flourished in the recent past. Such companies have an eye on the vast Indian market where the whole community is complextion concerned.
But overall fair colour, whitish , etc it all is of comparitive nature and when you feel south Indians are dark coloured , North Indians are not better than the Chinese and the chinese are not better than the portugese, spanish and they even not better than the Germans. This goes like this!!!

People who are fair get a greater chance of fan following.
What about Vijay? He was dark too, over the period of time, he has gained colour. Isnt Ajith much fairer than him?
Same with Danush/Simbu, Kamal/Rajini . . .
Reasons why they make-up like that
a) To match the colour of the heroine
b) Fans are dark coloured and they dont want to see their hero the same way.
c) We have depicted our Gods to be fair and hence how can a celebrity be dark?
d) If its a village story, dark is fine, for a city based subject, they have to be fair and stylish.
e) The amount of lights and lighting involved in films these days automatically projects an actor to be fair.
f) Actors that you saw years back actually become fair over a period of time as their lifestyle becomes better - they are in foreign locations most of the time - they drink lot of fruit juices and follow a strict diet, etc.
g) Any director/producer prefer a fair person compared to a dark person, so it all starts from the root - no wonder they bring actors/actresses from north.

Hi! hello...I hail from Andhra Pradesh...South India. Here people are expecting their heroes to be fair in colour than their skin colour. In foreign countries, the situation is different. they usually like the actors who appear in their original colours. And there is no exception for producers and directors that they will produce and direct the film according to audience expectations for their success. And hello...any actor can survive in this film industry if and only if the audience applauds and make their film hit. If they come without makeup, they will be looked up and down and their film is a flop....that's the ultimate result and the producer will get a heart attack!!!

I am also South Indian but I am not from Tamil Nadu but from A.P. And the actors there r light skinned. I have seen some Tamil movies & the actors seem 2 be dark. I don't think people shud pretend 2 be lighter if they r actually not. In Chandramukhi, Rajnikanth actually seems light.
