It means a whole lot of different things to me. For one it IS a symbol of pride--most people already know this, but still, I had to say it. The most important thing are the colors. There used to be a lot more: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for nature, turquoise for the arts, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit. Hot pink and turquoise were eliminated after the assassination of the openly gay commissioner, Harvey Milk, and so the flag could be divided equally. I also think the colors represent the diversity in the homosexual world. As for a philosophy, I don't really have one. I don't feel any of the shame that comes with being gay when I see the flag. It's kind of like how Christians get peace or what have you from holding or seeing a cross--I just feel like I'm in place rather than out of place ^.^ I hope I said what you were looking for!

I know the colors do represent things- but I normally forget what they are.
I think the idea of a rainbow is very beautiful. its joining colors without those colors losing their individuality. they are all sewn together but not just mixed into one giant colorful mess- which would probally form a brownish/black color.
I'm bisexual and I love our flag. the gender symbolism, the living in at least to if not three world. most bisexuals have gender issues. they can indentify with both straight people and gay people- but are neither. some are flamboyant and really feel connected with the gay community. others are more into binary gender roles and feel very straight. but they never feel completly accepted on either place.

To be honest with you I really DONT like the rainbow flag.
First of, we dont need a flag, we are not a nation or a political party either.
But if we need to have one, I'd rather see something...mmm...more serious maybe? Maybe a black, which is also more forgiving lol
But the first thing that comes in mind when I see the rainbow flag is diversity.

My take on it is that it represents diversity and that we shouldn't judge others just because they are different.
