The way that I was taught to remember this 150 years ago, was that "Stalagmites" MIGHT reach the ceiling, meaning they started from the ground, and that "Stalactites" STICK TO THE FLOOR......... HOPE this helps you.

When I was a kid very long ago, I remember hearing during a tour of Carlsbad Caverns: "Stalactites stick tight, stalagmites might." I have never forgotten "which was which" since.
