Marin County just outside of San Francisco. It's near a big city, but still relatively quiet and rustic. It's also near the ocean.

Austin, TX or NYC
I am from Austin and I absolutely love it-it is not huge, but it is not small either and it is growing. The music scene is great.
NYC just has a great energy about it. Everything you could possibly want is right there.
