The only difference between the two are Braxton Hicks contractions aren't progressive (they don't get worse with time), and they aren't productive (they don't dilate your cervix). Other than that, they're the same. They'll feel the same as early labor contractions.

yes your stomach gets hard with braxton hicks. the difference between the 2 is one dialates your cervix and the other does not. also active labor contractions get closer together and more painful with each one. you are having braxton hicks probably but just for the record you can have mild contractions that dialate your cervix and then go away. i started dilating a month before i had my son and now i am 36 weeks and i have had contraction on and off that i thought were just braxton hicks but come to find out i am dilated 1 cm. so they are real contractions just some are productive and some are not. but as others have said when you go into active labor you will know it.

LOL Like someone else, I just dealt with this last night too.
Braxton-Hicks are supposed to be painless, but many women will tell you they aren't. They are also irregular, and will usually go away with rest and drinking a lot of water.
"Real" contractions are closer together, and don't go away with rest. They don't have to be terribly painful for them to be worrisome. The ones I was having yesterday felt like menstrual cramps, and I could feel my entire uterus get hard. My labor and delivery said that if I had more than 6 in an hour, to come in to the hospital. I went in and they monitored me for a while, then gave me a shot to stop them. Since you are under 36 weeks, you may want to call your doctor.

okay, i just had to deall with all of this last night. they could be true labor contractions. the difference between the two is that reall labor contractions are regular, another words, they will be over 30 seconds long but not constant and will be evenly spaced apart. Time them........start from the beg of one contraction and see how log it takes to start another one. do this a few times and see if the time is with in around 30 seconds of each other. if they are regualr then you need to call your dr or labor and delivery.
even if they arent reg. make sure to watch them and see if they get reg.
if they are regualr they will monitor you for a couple hours and may give you a shot to relax you uterus and stop the contrations. they dont want you to have the baby until 36 weeks.
good luck!

braxton hicks are not constant, they are also not supposed to be painful. Labor contactions feels like period cramps on steroids. Back pain and abdomen pain plus cramping. And they are consitent. They get so painful you won't be able to move or even talk when they are close together.

Those sound like BH's. When you get a contraction, you will definately feel a difference. Mine were like a wave of pain coming from my back to front. Hang in there; the BH's are a sign your body is getting prepared. You are in the home stretch!

Yes, your whole stomach gets hard with real contractions. The difference is that they hurt so bad it takes your breath away; makes your eyes water and your toes curl. THAT is the difference...and its unmistakable.
